Venom's Pre-Ticket Sales Are Beating Out Some Of The MCU's Recent Movies

The critical reaction towards Venom may not be great overall so far, but on the commercial side of things, the movie looks like it's going to be a powerhouse performer. Last month, it was estimated that Venom could kick off domestically in the $55-$85 million range, and as of yesterday, Eddie Brock's standalone adventure is predicted to have a global opening weekend haul of between $160-$175 million. Now word's come in that Venom is also doing quite well with regards to advance ticket sales, so much so that it's outselling recent Marvel Cinematic Universe movies Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Spider-Man: Homecoming and Ant-Man and the Wasp.

While the above three movies weren't the heaviest of hitters in the MCU lineup, like most of their ilk, they nonetheless commercially successful, so Venom is outpacing them in pre-sales is quite the accomplishment. As if that weren't impressive enough, Atom Tickets also noted in its report that among all Marvel movies, i.e. both the Marvel Studios entries and stories made by other studios that carry the Marvel banner, Venom ranks in third place, with Avengers: Infinity War and Black Panther making up the top 2. Looking outside of the comic book realm, the majority of people buying Venom tickets ahead of time on Atom Tickets fall into the 18-29 age range, so clearly a lot of young'uns are itching for some big screen, symbiote-enhanced action. As for why Venom is killing it with pre-sales, Atom Tickets editorial lead Alisha Grauso noted that even though the movie has been getting mixed reviews, there's still a lot of excitement to see this newest live action take on the character and how Tom Hardy handles the role.

Although every movie aims to be both critically and commercially successful, sometimes one doesn't always lead to the other. In Venom's case, if the early reviews are any indication, it's won't go down in history as one of the best comic book movies, but on the money front, there won't be any issues. I imagine another reason a lot of folks are eager to watch Venom is to see how Eddie Brock's origin story is handled without Spider-Man being around. That, along with the other characters and plenty of action, provides numerous reasons for people to check out Venom this weekend, though it should also be noted that Venom's opening weekend competition, A Star is Born, is also doing well in pre-sales, outperforming Oscar contenders like The Big Sick, The Shape of Water, and Call Me By Your Name.

You can judge Venom for yourself starting on Friday (or even tomorrow evening, depending on where you live), but be sure to read CinemaBlend's review of the movie now. What Avengers: Infinity War Could Mean For Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

The following contains significant spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War.

Avengers: Infinity War will certainly have some significant implications for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but possibly none more so than the already announced Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The new movie ends with the outer space team in a pretty bad way, and even if, as we expect, most of the damage will be undone by the end of Avengers 4, it seems likely that there will still be long-term consequences of this film that will have to be dealt with in the planned third Guardians movie.

We know so little about what Marvel is thinking in terms of Phase Four of the MCU, but the two movies we do know for sure are coming are the sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. We also know that the third Guardians movie will be the end of the road for the current iteration of the Guardians team. Of course, based on what happened in Infinity War, there's a good chance we may have already seen that end.

At the conclusion of the new film, only one member of the Guardians is left standing. Rocket has survived while Groot, Drax, Mantis and Star-Lord have all fallen victim to the Infinity Stones. In addition to that, Gamora was killed by Thanos as a sacrifice in order to obtain the Soul Stone. At this point, the expectation is certainly that the use of the Infinity Gauntlet will somehow be reversed, bringing back to life all, or at least many, of those that were taken by it. If that happens, it may bring the rest of the Guardians back, but it will still leave Gamora dead. (Or not. Anything's on the table at this point.)

When James Gunn first announced that he would return to direct the third installment of the Guardians of the Galaxy, he said, "It will conclude the story of this iteration of the Guardians of the Galaxy" which, while that doesn't necessarily mean the characters will all leave the MCU, implies that the team will be changing by the end of this new film, or at least before the next one, if and when there was one. However, it seems quite likely that this iteration of the Guardians may already be over, which could be exactly what the next film will be about.

While Avengers 4 could certainly bring the entire Guardians team back from the dead, Gamora included, doing so would cheapen everything that Infinity War did, and as such, it seems likely that Gamora at least will stay gone. With so many characters and storylines to juggle, it seems unlikely the next Avengers will movie will be able to adequately deal with the fallout of this for the team, which means Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 could very well be about how the rest of the squad deals with a missing teammate.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was a quite emotional story, dealing with the relationships between children and their parents and the importance of family. In the case of our heroes, this tends to mean the family that they have made together, rather than the ones they were born into. Every member of the Guardians has had a tragic life that they begin to heal from only after finding each other. It makes a lot of sense then that the last step of that healing process may actually be dealing with the loss of a member of that family.

Peter Quill's relationship with Yondu (Michael Rooker) was a difficult one and while the end of Guardians Vol. 2 saw Quill saying goodbye to a father figure, it was more about coming to terms with his past. Peter never saw Yondu as a father at the time. His relationship with Gamora is something else. Avengers: Infinity War shows the two together romantically for the first time and while it's unclear how long their relationship has been like this, there have been years that have passed between the events of Guardians Vol. 2 and Infinity War from a story standpoint, Peter and Gamora certainly see each other as family even if it's only been recently they've become more than that.

What's more, Gamora has always been, as unlikely as it sounds considering she's a former professional assassin, the moral center of the team. She's the one at the beginning of Infinity War who says they need to answer the distress call for no other reason beyond the fact that people might need help. How will the rest of the Guardians react without that voice?

Whoever the villain of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is will very likely be inconsequential to the story the movie may really try to tell, one of a family grieving.

Without knowing where Avengers 4 will take the story of the Guardians of the Galaxy, it's impossible to know for sure where the team will be at the beginning of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (or even WHEN on the MCU timeline that story will take place). However, it does seem very likely that the story we get won't simply be another fun, outer space adventure with the same characters so many have grown to love.

New Bumblebee Video Reveals First Look At Cliffjumper And Possibly More

When Bumblebee opens next month, we'll see the Transformers like we've never seen them before, at least on the big screen anyways. The franchise is heading back to the 1980s with classic designs and some Transformers that haven't had the chance to shine yet in live-action. A new video for Bumblebee gives us our first look at one of those characters, Cliffjumper, and possibly Arcee as well. Check it out:

At one point in the video, you'll see Optimus Prime, gun in hand, running through a firefight, and if you pause the video or go frame by frame, you can see a bright red Autobot running beside him. That looks to be Cliffjumper, the paranoid hothead who absolutely hates Decepticons and transforms into a Porsche 924 Turbo.

We know that Andrew Morgado will voice Cliffjumper in Bumblebee so he's definitely in the movie and it looks like he is fighting alongside Optimus just like in the original Transformers cartoon. And although you don't get a great look at him here, it's cool to see that this original hero is back.

A split second later in the video posted to the Transformers Twitter account, as Optimus Prime jumps from an explosion, you see a Transformer or Tranformers on the right side of the frame. Some fans think that they see Arcee in the mix there.

Arcee is a female Autobot who is traditionally pink and white was introduced in 1986's The Transformers: The Movie. This character did sort of already appear in the Michael Bay-Verse in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen as a motorcycle, but maybe she'll get a bit more to do here.

In addition to the brief glimpses at OG Transformers characters, what this video really seems to be stressing is that Bumblebee is taking the franchise back to its roots. The film is set in the '80s, the time when Transformers became part of pop culture. As a result, the aesthetics for the Transformers in Bumblebee are directly drawing from the Generation 1 designs that fans fell in love with in the cartoons.

This has come through in the trailers, as just seeing Optimus Prime in his original more simplistic, toy-like design has a potent nostalgic effect. With potentially more Transformers of the likes of Arcee and Cliffjumper from the decade the cartoon was at its height of popularity only makes Bumblebee all the more exciting. It feels like Bumblebee has the potential to be the Transformers film fans of the cartoons and toys have wanted all along.

Bumblebee is directed by Kubo and the Two Strings' Travis Knight and stars Hailee Steinfeld and John Cena. Bumblebee rolls into a positively jam-packed weekend when it opens on December 21. For all of the biggest movies hitting theaters next year, head on over to our 2019 release schedule.
