See What Common Could Look Like As DCs Green Lantern

The DC live-action universe has had an unpredictable tenure in theaters, and is showing no signs of slowing down. While Warner Bros. struggled to get the shared universe off the ground with disappointing performances in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad, things seem to be on an upswing. Aquaman is a critical and box office hit, and there are a handful of exciting projects coming down the pipeline over the next few years.

But there are also plenty of DC projects that appear to be caught in development hell, as no news has arrived. Among them is Green Lantern Corps., which is being written and produced by Geoff Johns himself. It's unclear when we might see that movie or which Lanterns could star, but plenty of actors names' have been thrown around to play either Hal Jordan or John Stewart. Rapper/actor Common's is one of the popular candidates to play Stewart, so check out what he could look like as an Emerald Knight.

Well, I've got chills. John Stewart is one of the most popular Green Lanterns in the comics' history, so plenty of actors would like to slip on the ring for Green Lantern Corps. From the look of this image, Common seems like he'd be able to pull off the role. But will he get it?

This new image comes to us from an Instagram user who edited together a shot of Common wearing John Stewart's signature Green Lantern costume. He's seen presumably on the planet Oa, as there are other Lanterns visible in the background of the image. The outfit seems to be modeled after John Stewart's comic book appearance, and the possibly the costume used as a skin in the game in Injustice 2. Stewart doesn't wear a mask to hide his identity, instead proudly serving as both a Green Lantern and U.S. Marine.

DC fans are hoping that John Stewart will have a major presence in Green Lantern Corps., should the developing project get off the ground over at Warner Bros. The title implies an ensemble-based movie, rather than a solo/origin flick for one Lantern. This should help Corps. distinguish itself from Ryan Reynolds' ill-fated Green Lantern movie, while also helping to expand the overall DC universe in the process.

Of course, Common isn't the only name that's been surrounding the role of John Stewart. Fast and the Furious star Tyrese Gibson has been actively campaigning to take on the mantle for years, popping back up every so often to remind the powers that be that he's interested. It doesn't looks like Warner Bros. has been casting the project, given the early state of the blockbuster. Choosing a John Stewart and/or Hal Jordan will likely include a multi-movie contract, so the pressure is one to get the right talented involved, especially with a franchise that had such bad luck in the theaters the first time.

John Stewart is a character that is historic in the DC Universe, as he was only the second black hero introduced on the page. Stewart became more of a household name with the animated series Justice League Unlimited, which featured the character in the main cast, serving as the show's signature Green Lantern.

Of course, there may be a few obstacles standing in the way of Common getting the role of John Stewart in Green Lantern Corps. Perhaps the most obvious is that the actor has already had a role in the DC Universe, albeit a small one. He appeared briefly in David Ayer's Suicide Squad, playing Gotham gangster Monster T in a Joker/Harley flashback sequence.

After trying to do business with Jared Letos Joker, Monster T crossed The Crown Prince Of Crime by looking a bit too closely at Harleys dancing. Joker promptly killed the character, and his short tenure in the DCEU presumably came to a close.

Since Common was killed of during Suicide Squad, he may have the ability to inhabit another character in the DC Universe. Monster T wasnt exactly a big presence in Suicide Squad, with David Ayers blockbuster introducing a massive cast of characters at once.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe broke new ground by revealing large Phases of movies, with concrete release dates set for films within the massive shared universe. But Warner Bros. has been keeping their plans a bit more quiet, as myriad announced projects remain in development. Green Lantern Corps. is only one of those blockbusters, although Geoff Johns involvement certainly gives the upcoming project street cred within the fandom.

Ultimately Geoff Johns has a ton of different Green Lanterns to utilize and feature in Green Lantern Corps. While Hal Jordan is no doubt the most iconic Lantern, John Stewart is massively popular as well. Theres also the alien Kilowog and bad boy Guy Gardner, to name a few.

Overall, it looks like the DC Universe is producing a mixture of solo movies and ensemble projects. While Aquaman and Shazam! have clear protagonists, Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) will feature a group of DC femme fatales, and Suicide Squad 2 should bring back the titular group of villains.

The DC Universe is currently riding high on the success of Aquaman, as James Wan has once again brought his vision to the screen. And with it, the shared universes first critical success since Patty Jenkins Wonder Woman. The movie has been performing well both domestically and internationally, breaking some records in the process.

Next up is Andy F. Sandbergs Shazam!, which will once again zero in on a specific part of the DCEU. This time it will be on the kids living in a superpowered world, as 14-year old Billy Batson gets superpowers. Wonder Woman 1984 is also on its way, alongside Birds of Prey and Todd Phillips Joker.

Green Lantern fans were bummed out when no Emerald Knight was brought into live-action for Zack Snyders Justice League. Save for a quick cameo, the Lanterns havent been seen or heard from during the first handful of blockbusters to hit theaters. That is, except for the shot of Green Lantern that appears during the DC Universes opening credits.

Green Lantern Corps. is currently set to arrive on July 24th, 2020. In the meantime, be sure to check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

6 Pokemon References Detective Pikachu Needs To Include

Detective Pikachu's trailer showed it has the potential to be a good film, despite it being one of lesser celebrated games of the Pokemon franchise. The flick appears to be a solid adaptation of the game, but it's possible it'll have some nods to other popular Pokemon games and shows in order to appeal to a broader audience. With that said, here are some of the things I think need to appear in Detective Pikachu to truly "electrify" audiences.

A Gym BattleGym battles are a way of life if you're a Pokemon Trainer, but Tim Goodman's dream to be a trainer never worked out. Still, he seems to follow competitive Pokemon battles rather loyally, as seen by the bedroom littered with posters that promote Pokemon League events and high profile battles between Pokemon. There's also a short clip in which a Charizard is in a caged arena, which could mean a gym battle will take place.

That said, a Pokemon battling doesn't necessarily mean a gym battle is underway. Pokemon gyms usually have a little more style than steel cages, and that Charizard doesn't seem to be taking orders from any trainer in the abbreviated scene. Furthermore, some of the posters on walls tease matchups between Pokemon, rather than trainers. It's almost as though these battles are more Pokken Tournament than traditional trainer battles, which is still cool, but not as cool as a gym battle.

Officer Jenny And Nurse JoyWhat would a Pokemon movie be without two of the franchise's most loyal civil servants? Most all areas in the world of Pokemon have both, and they all look the same as the ones in other towns. In the anime, it's explained that each characters' doppelgangers are actually cousins, hence their near-identical appearances. It's a silly excuse, albeit one that an anime created to promote a video game can get away with.

It's also something Detective Pikachu could get away with, provided they have two actresses willing to play the part in multiple locations. Perhaps an officer on the scene in Leaventown is seen in Ryme City, or two identical nurses provide care to Pikachu at a Pokemon center? It wouldn't even need to be directly referenced considering most Pokemon fans would pick up on it, but a witty remark from Ryan Reynolds' Pikachu wouldn't hurt to really sell the joke.

Jigglypuff Needs To Draw On People's FacesOne of the original Pokemon anime's iconic running gags involved a Jigglypuff who would always appear at inopportune times and entertain folks with a song. As Pokemon fans know, the creature's voice is capable of putting people to sleep, which would then leave the Jigglypuff wildly offended at the presumed rudeness of its audience. As revenge, the Jigglypuff would use a black marker and draw on the sleeping people's faces.

This reference seems likely to happen, as the Jigglypuff briefly shown in the Detective Pikachu trailer is exhibiting the same aggravated body language of the one in the anime. There's also a man sleeping right next to it, which could mean he fell asleep due to being serenaded by the puffy and pink Pokemon. If the microphone it's holding with the green windscreen isn't actually a microphone, it's a safe bet someone's face is getting drawn on!

Classic Pokemon MusicDetective Pikachu already teased fans with a wonderful slowed-down mix of the original games' opening theme, so it stands to reason more songs from the Pokemon games will be heard throughout. If that's the case, it's a very exciting time to be a Pokemon fan, as a video game score with cinema-level quality is something any gamer will appreciate.

As for other tracks that would be great to hear, the "Battle Theme" from Pokemon Red and Blue feels mandatory. A reworked version of that would sync wonderfully with that Charizard sequence. A notable artist performing the "Poke rap" would also be an awesome Easter Egg to include, although it wouldn't make a ton of sense to have a song about 150 types of Pokemon sung in a movie where Ryme City is confirmed to have multiple generations of creatures.

A Criminal SyndicateAudiences should certainly prepare for some trouble to befall our two heroes in Detective Pikachu, but should we assume there will be double the trouble? Whether it's Team Rocket, Aqua, Magma or Galactic, there's usually one crime organization running the show behind all shady operations in the Pokemon universe. The disappearance of Tim's dad could be the work of one of these outfits or someone else involved in shady dealings.

Specifically, an appearance by the iconic bumbling Team Rocket cronies Jesse and James would be fantastic. While the team doesn't have a role in the game narrative of Detective Pikachu, they do have a talking Meowth which would blow the mind of Ryan Reynolds' Pikachu. As cool as that would be, the film will probably stray from direct references to those characters and perhaps instead pay homage to the Team Rocket brand with some simple graffiti on a city wall.

A Familiar FaceAs mentioned previously, the Detective Pikachu franchise is its own thing in the Pokemon world, so viewers shouldn't expect constant references to other bits of Pokemon media that were never a part of the original game. Having said that, this may be as good as an opportunity as the franchise could ever get to launching a full-blown Pokemon cinematic universe, so the introduction of a familiar face would be welcome.

Ash Ketchum would be the obvious choice, and a mere mention or tease of one of the franchise's most popular non-Pokemon characters could pave the way for a spinoff. Even if it was just a short after-credits scene completely disconnected from the central plot of the film, I think audiences would love it. Provided Detective Pikachu is a hit, a scene with Ash could be that moment that turns a modest Pokemon film into the "PCU."

Detective Pikachu is in theaters Friday, May 10, so there's still plenty of time for fans to speculate on all the Pokemon references it may or may not make. For more on the movie, be sure to check out this breakdown that showcases all the major Pokemon appearances in the first trailer.

It isn't too uncommon for actors to go through physical transformations for roles. Superhero actors usually have to get buff, and Christian Bale's body is basically silly putty by this point. An actor you wouldn't expect to get shredded, though, is Simon Pegg, but that's just what the 49-year-old British comedian did for his latest movie. Check out this picture of a shirtless Pegg showing off his weight loss and muscle gain for the film Inheritance.

Simon Pegg is best known for comedy films like Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World's End, but the actor has become a staple supporting player in the Star Trek and Mission: Impossible franchises. Tom Cruise handles most of the action in the M:I films, but maybe Pegg can give him a run for his money in the next movie.

Simon Pegg has undergone some serious training for his latest movie, Inheritance. Pegg's trainer Nick Lower shared the pics of Pegg's hard work on social media. The transformation took six months and Pegg lost a whopping 19 pounds and 4% body fat. Apparently, the role called for a"very lean" body and a specific body shape and look, Lower wrote on Twitter. The role in question is for the film Inheritance, which explores what happens when the patriarch of a wealthy and powerful family suddenly passes away, leaving his wife and daughter with a shocking secret inheritance that threatens to unravel and destroy their lives. It's unclear what specific part Simon Pegg is playing, and why he needed to be in such lean shape, but I'm sure all of that will be revealed shortly.

The rest of the cast of Inheritance includes Lily Collins, Connie Nielsen, and Chace Crawford. The film is directed by Vaughn Stein with a screenplay written by Matthew Kennedy.

Simon Pegg officially joins the club of actors who have transformed their bodies in one way or another to take on a specific role. Christian Bale is perhaps the most famous for doing this. In 2004, Bale lost 63 pounds for the role of Trevor Reznik in The Machinist, and recently acquired one hell of a gut to play Dick Cheney in the Oscar-nominated Vice.

Additionally, pretty much every actor who plays a superhero gets jacked. The most recent example would be Brie Larson for Captain Marvel. She can push a 5000 pound jeep, among a number of other impressive feats.

But don't try this at home, kids. Any kind of extreme physical transformation like Simon Pegg's should only be done with the guidance of a trainer and medical/health professionals. Or, better yet, not at all -- unless you are also making a movie.
