Why The Villain In Dumbo Was A Bigger Shock Than We Expected

Why The Villain In Dumbo Was A Bigger Shock Than We Expected

The following contains MAJOR SPOILERS for the new live-action Dumbo.

It was clear from the very first trailers that the live-action Dumbo was going to tell a very different story than the original animated classic. Throughout the film's promotion, we were introduced to entirely new characters and settings that showed us the new film would definitely not be a standard remake. The original Dumbo was a movie without a villain, and the new version never entirely tipped its hand in that regard during marketing. It seemed clear that Michael Keaton's character was being set up as the bad guy, but details were left to a minimum. Still, I found myself watching the new film in utter amazement this week when I realized that the villain in Disney's newest movie... is basically an evil Walt Disney.

Michael Keaton plays the role of V.A. Vandevere in the new Dumbo. In the film, as soon as he learns of the existence of the flying elephant, he travels to the Medici Brothers circus in order to obtain the spectacle for his own entertainment venue. However, Vandevere doesn't run a competing circus. Instead, he has build an entertainment mecca, a massive complex where people come from all around to see a variety of different shows and experience unique attractions. It's called Dreamland. He built a theme park.

Micheal Keaton doesn't bear any physical resemblance to Walt Disney in the film; the trademark mustache is missing, but the parallels are clear. The character certainly has other influences as well, like Thomas Edison, who by all accounts actually was an asshole like Vandevere. There's maybe a little J.D. Rockefeller and J.P Morgan there as well, but Walt Disney certainly has a lot in common with this entire class. All are titans in an industry that they've largely created themselves. Of course, Disney is the only one who also built a theme park.

The existence of the park isn't the only connection to Disney. When we first meet Vandevere, he convinces Danny DeVito's Max Medici that the days of the circus are numbered. Now, rather than forcing a show to travel around the country to where the guests were, the way to be successful is to build a permanent entertainment installation and make the guests come to you.

This was basically the entire argument that led to the creation of Disneyland in the first place. Walt wasn't necessarily trying to put the circus out of business, but it's absolutely true that he wasn't a huge fan of the carnivals and circuses that were the popular form of "family" entertainment in the days before his theme park. He found them to be dirty, thought many of the attractions to be cheap and felt they were mostly only fun for kids, leaving their parents to sit around, probably drinking, while the kids went on the rids. He wanted a place where parents and their kids could have fun together.

It seems like Vandevere built his park simply because it's less work to build a fixed location complex then one that travels. The rationale is different, but the result is the same. It's these simple twists that make Michael Keaton's character the "evil" version of the real man.

You simply can't have a villain who owns a theme park and not make people think of Walt Disney. The man and the concept are forever linked together. However, things go so much further than that. Vandevere's Dreamland has attractions that are specifically designed to remind guests of early Disneyland attractions, like the Carousel of Progress and Rocket to the Moon. Dreamland is actively trying to make you think about Disneyland.

This decision, needless to say, is remarkable. Walt Disney is still very much idolized within the company that bears his name. The idea that a villain could be created that would even suggest Walt himself is a thing to behold. Walt Disney's reputation has been an important pillar of the entire company for decades, making the idea that he could inspire a villain seem impossible before now. When Walt Disney was alive he was very careful about the reputation he cultivated. He was very open and honest about this, saying once...

Ive worked my whole life to create the image of what Walt Disney is. Its not me. I smoke, and I drink, and all the things we dont want the public to think about. My whole life has been devoted to building up this organization that is represented by the name Walt Disney'

V.A. Vandevere has clearly done this too. When he first arrives at the Medici Brothers circus, everybody is in awe of him. When he shows up in his own theme park, he gets noticed. He clearly has his own public persona.

After Walt's passing, the company that carried on his name continued to build up the image of who Walt Disney was. Even as recently as 2013, when Tom Hanks, the nicest actor who ever lived, played the man himself in Saving Mr. Banks, it was a major breakthrough just to have a shot of Disney holding a lit cigarette. Many old publicity images of the man where he was holding a cigarette would actually airbrush it out of the picture. That film never showed him actually smoking it, of course. That would have been a bridge too far, but that's how carefully the Walt Disney legacy is guarded.

Walt Disney wasn't perfect, he was just a person. However, as has happened with many real people who have obtained such massively popular reputations, there has been a backlash. A lot of the negative things that have been reported about Walt Disney are utterly untrue (that's an entirely separate column), but that hasn't stopped many from viewing the man as exactly the ruthless capitalist monster that Michael Keaton portrays in Dumbo. That's all the more reason that this fictional character in this movie is shocking to see.

V.A. Vadevere is an over-the-top cartoon villain. He intentionally screws Max Medici and everybody in the circus to get what he wants. He orders Dumbo's mother killed to eliminate her as a distraction. He pushes his performers to perform in unsafe circumstances to make the show better. All of this is out of a desire for money.

While V.A. Vandevere may be all about watching his theme park make money, Disney once said of his business of making movies...

We dont make movies to make money, we make money to make more movies.

V.A. Vandevere clearly has far more capitalistic notions than this when it comes to his theme park. He wants Dumbo because Dumbo will bring him money. That money can be used to grow his business. Greed is a fairly common motivation for villains in Disney movies today, so Michael Keaton's character falls right in line with that, but in Walt's day, painting making money as a bad thing was much less prevalent.

This is because Walt Disney himself was an unapologetic capitalist. If there's a difference between Walt Disney and V.A. Vandevere in this regard, it's only by a matter of degree. This is the same Walt Disney who has successfully and permanently linked his name to centuries-old fairy tales. He took public domain concepts that cost him nothing, and created versions that for many are now the standard, making him and his company rich in the process. Maybe Walt saw financial success as a means to an end, rather than an end to itself, as Vandevere seems to, but both of them were certainly focused on making their businesses financially successful.

V.A. Vandevere isn't Walt Disney, but let's not pretend that nobody on the production of the new Dumbo didn't make that connection, just as I, and many others, already have. That's assuming that it wasn't the goal from the outset. They knew the link would be made, and they went ahead with it. I can't decide if this decision is simply insane or the bravest thing that the Walt Disney Company has ever done. This likely won't change many opinions on old Uncle Walt, for good or ill, but it causes me to look at his company in a whole new way.

I Watched The Original Pet Sematary For The First Time And Yes, It's In Need Of A Remake

I Watched The Original Pet Sematary For The First Time And Yes, It's In Need Of A Remake

Spoiler Warning: I ruin key plot points in the book, 1989 movie, and probably the new movie, so proceed with caution!

Before IT Chapter 2 arrives in theaters later this year, another highly anticipated Stephen King adaptation is hitting screens. Pet Sematary is set to retell the tale of the Creed family, a family which moves to a rural town in Maine and discovers a mystical (and cursed) pet cemetery on their property. It's one of King's most popular books, but I had never read it. Nor had I watched the original film. With the early word on the street that the new film from co-directors Kevin Kolsch and Dennis Widmyer absolutely rules, I figured now was a great time to read the book and watch the original 1989 movie.

After watching the film last weekend, I decided that, yes, this thing was due for a remake.

The original Pet Sematary movie was directed by Mary Lambert and written by Stephen King himself. I had always heard positive things about the movie, and I was excited to watch it in preparation for the new film. Why did I do this? Probably so I could say "that's not how they did it in the book," and annoy all the people around me. Regardless, I loved the book, and Hulu made it easy for watch the original movie; however, it was not what I was expecting.

A few things I should point out before diving in: While the movie was pretty faithful to the book, watching for the first time, it falls short in some key areas like acting and pacing. Maybe I've just been spoiled by too many good horror films these past couple of years, but I had a hard time getting onboard this movie.

However, it's totally true that I am coming from a different experience than those who grew up watching the movie and I can see this being pretty scary if you were a kid in 1989 when the movie originally hit theaters. There is legitimately one scary scene involving a character named Zelda that unnerved me deeply. What scares audiences changes over time as well, and that could be one of the reasons watching for the first time now made me happy Pet Sematary is being remade. For me, most of the film ended up having a strong cheesy vibe that makes it more fun to watch than scary, but I obviously don't think that was the intention of the filmmakers.

Regardless of how dear some might hold the film, I think we can agree that the acting is not so great in this movie. It stars Dale Midkiff as Louis Creed, Denise Crosby as Rachel Creed, and Fred Gwynne as Jud Crandall. Gwyne is the best of the bunch and although his Maine accent makes it difficult to decipher what he's saying, he's still the strongest actor in the film. Unfortunately, Midkiff really bogs the movie down.

He reads almost every line with this monotone that makes it impossible to decipher what his character is actually feeling. There's a point in this movie where Louis is supposed to go insane, but Midkoff delivers dialogue the same way as before. You'd think having brought your dead son back from the dead only for him to murder your best friend and wife would have some impact on you.

Another issue I personally had sort of relates to having read the book. The pace is obviously faster, because when adapting a book to a movie, changes have to be made to streamline the plot. The problem I had with how Pet Sematary does it is that it drains the film of character and it's harder to discern why anyone is doing anything.

The perfect example is how the movie handles Jud Crandall, the Creed's elderly next door neighbor. In the book, Jud becomes Louis' best friend. They hang out on a regular basis, just kicking back and drinking beer. Jud also has a wife named Norma, whose life Louis saves after she has a nasty spill on Halloween. Because Louis saved his wife, Jud decides to pay him back by showing him the Micmac burial ground when Louis' family cat Church dies.

In the movie, Jud and Louis have a small handful of scenes together before Church has his inevitable meeting with a speeding truck and Jud shows the burial ground... just because? He pays some lip service later that he didn't want Louis' daughter to be sad, but it rings hollow -- especially because the movie's burial ground produces more violent animals than the book's did.

Norma was understandably cut from the movie (likely to keep the runtime and budget down), but without that extra motivation Jud doesn't really have much of an excuse to teach someone how to make zombies. In the book, Jud's decision isn't entirely his own because he's being influenced by the burial ground, but you still need that motivation to further justify the moment.

As an adaptation goes, Pet Sematary is generally pretty loyal to the book. It cuts back on certain supernatural elements, but otherwise it follows the book to a tee. However, that's not always a great thing and one thing should have absolutely been changed: Gage.

In Pet Sematary, Gage is Louis' toddler son who is tragically run over by a truck. He is eventually brought back to life by a desperate and grieving Louis to disastrous results. The movie keeps all this, but here's the thing about a two year old killer: it's adorable.

The resurrected Gage is not scary AT ALL. They weren't able to tone down any of the cuteness. Gage has the exact same voice and is still only saying age appropriate dialogue, so even when he's saying stuff like "I'll kill you," it's super cute. They try to make him frown and look angry but that just makes him even cuter! I mean look at this picture. What's even happening!?

It's supposed to be the most intense scene in the movie, but even when he's slicing calfs and chomping on necks, it was just too silly for me to overcome. In the book, Gage has an entirely different voice and talks like an adult, so it makes him much more menacing. He says some vile things to people right before he kills them.

Thankfully, it sounds like the new Pet Sematary avoided some of these pitfalls. We already know the upcoming release has changed this major plotline to feature Louis's older daughter, someone who can act and change their face and body language to actually be scary (which she reportedly is). It also should help that VFX, ratings, and pacing in movies has changed over time to accommodate modern audiences.

To be clear, all of this has not been to say that Pet Sematary didn't have its charms or that it wasn't good in 1989, but in 2019, I'm ready for something new. Hopefully the new movie will find a balance between today's modern sensibilities and being faithful to Stephen King's original work. It would be even nicer if it could in some ways pay homage to the 1989 film that came before it, because there would be less nostalgia and excitement related to the new Pet Sematary if it hadn't been for the 1989 film. Still, I think it's fair to say this thing was ready for a really scary, modern remake, and we'll know for sure if that's what we got on April 5.

---

For this discussion, we will use the upcoming Pet Sematary remake as an example (Major spoilers ahead). I will admit up front that this is one of my all-time favorite Stephen King stories. The 1989 film is also one of my favorite King adaptations as well as the first I ever saw that genuinely frightened and unnerved me growing up.
Pet Sematary: 10 Differences Between The Original and Remake

---

First, Pet Sematary, the remake is better than the original movie because there is better acting, with the exception of Pascow. I still think the original Pascow is better. However, the actors/actresses for Louis, Rachel, Jud, Ellie, Gage, Church the cat all have superior performances to the original.

One Very Important Thing We've Realized About Scarlet Witch In The MCU

One Very Important Thing We've Realized About Scarlet Witch In The MCU

In the pages of Marvel Comics, Scarlet Witch's powers have long been a bit tough to fully explain. Her beginnings saw her casting hexes (causing unlikely things to occur), which was eventually redefined as guidance of "chaos magic" -- but later it was retconned that her true ability is warping reality. To this point, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has side-stepped this confusion, suggesting that her abilities basically include mind and energy manipulation... but after reflecting on the events that go down in both Joss Whedon's The Avengers: Age of Ultron and Taika Waititi's Thor: Ragnarok, I find myself wondering if this is the full story. In actuality, there may be a lot more to the character's unusual gifts than what has been realized to this point on the big screen.

This conversation begins with a look back at a pivotal scene in The Avengers: Age of Ultron, specifically Thor's first encounter with Scarlet Witch in Ulysses Klaue's hideout. While he believes at first that he is too mighty to be put under a spell by mysterious young woman, that changes when he realizes that he has been "transported" to Asgard. It is here that he has a disturbing confrontation with Heimdall, who appears to be blinded. The Asgardian gatekeeper warns that the God of Thunder is leading them "to hell," and that the hero is by nature a destroyer. The nightmare ends as Thor is engulfed in lightning, and given glimpses of both the Infinity Stones and the future Avenger known as Vision.

If all of that sounds very familiar, it's because you watched the rest of Avengers: Age of Ultron and the entirety of Thor: Ragnarok. Not only does the Asgardian hero use one of the Infinity Stones to bring Vision to life in the former blockbuster, but he also goes on to encounter everything that Scarlet Witch put in his head in the latter: Heimdall has been removed from his position as gatekeeper; Asgard is indeed brought to hell, specifically through the arrival of Hela; Thor makes the decision let Asgard be destroyed, fulfilling the Ragnarok prophecy; and he realizes that his lightning powers are innate, and don't come from Mjolnir.

What are we to take from this? Scarlet Witch didn't just show Thor something to freak him out; she showed him a scary vision of the near future. That means she is performing a lot more than just mere mind manipulation -- and it's pretty significant for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe when you consider some of the other little plays that she puts on the minds of the Avengers.

Of course, the big one is the hallucination that Tony Stark is given in Baron Strucker's hidden base just before the title card in The Avengers: Age of Ultron. The hero also known as Iron Man is shown a hilltop full of dead Avengers -- a scenario made only more horrifying by Captain America's dying words, "You could have saved us. Why didn't you do more?" Meanwhile, a portal has opened up in the distance, with a full herd of Chitauri Leviathans flying towards Earth. In context, this clearly freaks Tony out because of what he went through during the Battle of New York, and it's what further inspires him to build a suit of armor around the world a.k.a. Ultron. Like with Thor, however, it may not be just some creepy dream. In a worst case scenario, it could easily be the end result of the titular team's confrontation with Thanos in The Avengers: Infinity War.

The second big question mark is what Captain America sees during the same Scarlet Witch encounter as Thor -- which is notably not really a nightmare. The star-spangled hero finds himself back in the 1940s, reunited with his true love, Peggy Carter, during a dance. Things are a bit strange, as flashbulbs going off, nearby scuffles, and even a wine spill remind him of the war, but it's hardly anything like the terror shown to his teammates. That odd tone is something that Tony Stark remarks on later in Avengers: Age of Ultron when the unit is hiding out at the Barton household, but could be much more significant than Steve Rogers not having a "dark side."

This is certainly digging way deeper into Informed Speculation Mode, but what if Captain America's vision is indeed what is waiting for him in the future? One of the Infinity Stones that Thanos is pursuing in The Avengers: Infinity War is the Time Stone, and it's not at all outside the realm of possibility that it could be used on the displaced hero -- sending him back to the past that he never had when he was frozen at the North Pole. There could even be a nice mental torture component to it, as Cap recognizes that the world is wrong, but doesn't fully understand why.

That leaves us with what admittedly could be a challenge to the larger theory: the "spell" that Scarlet Witch casts on Black Widow. Unlike Thor, Tony and Steve, Natasha doesn't look into a horrifying future or a confused reality, but instead clearly revisits her own past. She is forced to relive her experiences at the Red Room Academy, which was the facility in Belarus where she was trained at a young age to become the ultimate spy and assassin. In the context of this feature there's less to read from this experience, as it doesn't really feature any kind of metaphor or hidden meanings... but that doesn't negate what's seen by the others. It's possible that this past experience in Natasha's mind was more suitable for Scarlet Witch's needs than anything more apocalyptic.

Naturally, there are some big unanswered questions that remain as a result of this theory. Does Scarlet Witch herself fully understand the extent of her powers? To what extent is she showing a version of the future versus creating one? What was it exactly that she showed Bruce Banner during that same Avengers: Age of Ultron encounter? This is all material that could be explored in both The Avengers: Infinity War and the untitled Avengers 4, and would be a fascinating way for the two movies to tie things back to some of the most important moments in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
