What To Expect From Jude Law's Captain Marvel Character
Contrary to the initial belief that Captain Marvel would depict Carol Danvers' origin story, it was revealed yesterday that Brie Larson's iteration of the the longtime Marvel superhero will not only already have her powers when the movie begins, but she'll be serving in the elite military Kree organization known as Starforce. Leading the Starforce is Jude Law's character, who has taken a liking to Carol. While Law didn't name who he's playing in Captain Marvel, he did disclose that this individual is incredibly dedicated to the Kree empire. As the actor put it:
He is driven by a belief in the divine leadership of the Kree people. So he's almost a devout warrior --- unquestioning, conservative, but inspirational.
When Jude Law was first rumored to be joining Captain Marvel late last year, it was implied that he would be playing Walter Lawson, a.k.a. Mar-Vell, the Kree protagonist who was indirectly responsible for Carol Danvers gaining her powers in the comics. Apparently Marvel Studios isn't willing to officially divulge the character's identity just yet, but one thing is certain: he's loyal to his fellow Kree, who live on Hala. While it's possible that this could still be Mar-Vell, albeit with some creative liberties taken, the above description also brings to mind Yon-Rogg, a Kree villain who Ben Mendelsohn was previously rumored to be playing. That has since been debunked, but perhaps Law is portraying the character instead, which then begs the question of if Mar-Vell is appearing at all in Captain Marvel.
As far as Carol Danvers is concerned, Jude Law's Captain Marvel character views her as a "mentee and pet project," prioritizing her over other Starforce members, like Ronan the Accuser, Korath the Pursuer and Minn-Erva. Law continued in his interview with EW:
These extraordinary powers she has, he sees them as something of a blessing and something that she has to learn how to control. That's a motif throughout the piece, the element of learning to control one's emotions and to use your powers wisely.
Brie Larson added that there's "a lot of back and forth" between Carol Danvers and Jude Law's character in Captain Marvel, which creates some tension within the rest of Starforce. While Law's character sounds invested in Carol's development, maybe things could take a turn where he shifts from being her mentor to her adversary. The Skrulls are Captain Marvel's main antagonists, but given how important his people are to him, if a situation comes up where Carol chooses to protect humanity over continuing to serve the Kree, I could see Law's character retaliating against her.
